Brief History OF GILGIT BALTISTAN

Gilgit Baltistan is a region located in the northern part of Pakistan. It is a land of rich cultural heritage and breathtaking natural beauty. 

  

 The history of Gilgit Baltistan dates back thousands of years. The region has been inhabited by various ancient civilizations, including the Dards, who were the earliest known settlers. Over the centuries, Gilgit Baltistan has been influenced by different empires and dynasties, including the Mauryan Empire, the Kushan Empire, and the Tibetan Empire.

 

 One of the significant historical events in Gilgit Baltistan was the spread of Buddhism in the region during the reign of Emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE. Many Buddhist monasteries and rock carvings can still be found in the area, showcasing the region's deep-rooted Buddhist heritage. 

 

 In the 7th century CE, Islam arrived in Gilgit Baltistan, and the region became a part of the Muslim world. It witnessed the rise and fall of various Muslim dynasties, including the Mughals and the Safavids. During the 19th century, Gilgit Baltistan became a part of the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir under the rule of the Dogra dynasty. However, in 1947, when India and Pakistan gained independence, Gilgit Baltistan's status became a subject of dispute between the two countries.

 

 Currently, Gilgit Baltistan is a self-governing region in Pakistan, with its own legislative assembly and governor. It is known for its stunning landscapes, including the Karakoram mountain range, the Indus River, and the famous K2, the second-highest peak in the world. The people of Gilgit Baltistan are diverse, with various ethnic groups and languages spoken in the region. The region is known for its vibrant cultural festivals, traditional music, and handicrafts.
